以太网无源光网络（EPON）是点到多点的网络拓扑与以太网技术的连接。因而可以被看作是点到多点LAN。在上行方向（ONU到OLT），EPON是多点到点网络，在下行方向（OLT到ONU），EPON是一个播送网络。并且，EPON中OLT和ONU之间是不对等的，它们归于主从关系。

(Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) is the connection of point-to-multipoint network topology and Ethernet technology. Therefore, it can be regarded as a point-to-multipoint LAN. In the upstream direction (ONU to OLT), EPON is a multipoint-to-point network, and in the downstream direction (OLT to ONU), EPON is a broadcast network. Moreover, the OLT and ONU in EPON are not equal, they belong to the master-slave relationship.)
